Parental Security Tips You Should Know Before Buying Your Kid a Laptop

Making sure you kids are safe online is one role many parents have taken into priority. But, it’s still unfortunate some don’t know how to go about it. Many parents just buy their kids computers and leave them to learn these things on their own. And research has proved that a very large percentage of kids who end up becoming victims of online tormenting are those whose parents don’t pay much attention to what they do on the internet.
As a busy parent, you might not be able to afford the luxury of staying and watching over your kids when they are on the internet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help them out of the dangers that await them on the internet.

Here in this article, I’ll be sharing some important but yet easy to follow tips parents should know before handing their kids a laptop/desktop computer.>

How to Block Websites

There are certain websites you won’t want your kids to visit on the internet. You might be afraid that after leaving for work your kids would visit these websites at your absence.  Let me put your worries to rest by telling you that you don’t need that much worry because blocking websites is an easy task on windows.>

Begin the procedure by typing “notepad C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts” in command prompt or Run and then hit the “enter” key. A notepad will appear on the screen. Scroll to the last line of the notepad and hit the enter key and then type “127.0.0.1 (name of website)”. (without the quotes) e.g 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com.>

Save the file and exit. The next time you try to visit the website, it will make it unavailable.>

How to Use Monitoring Programs

One other tip you should know as a parent looking for how to make his/her kids’ internet experience a harmless one is how to use an internet monitoring software. Internet monitoring software helps you monitor the activities of your kids on the internet, from the slightest stroke of the keyboard to what transaction they perform on the internet.>

Though these programs come at a fee, you need not to panic because getting discounts and coupons for Webwatcher or Verisign can be done on my coupon blog. With these coupons, you should be able to purchase the software of your choice at a cheaper and discounted price.

How to Teach Kids about the Internet

Perhaps, the best way to make sure your kids are secure on the internet: teaching them about the internet and what to do when confronted by strangers on social networking sites like facebook is very important too.>

If you can create a special time to educate your kids about the use of the internet, the rewards you’ll get from it would be great. It will not only help your kids stay safe online, it will also familiarize them with the way the internet works.

I’ve discussed much about this on my Webwatcher discount and verisign promo website.>

After learning the tips shared above, you can then go ahead and buy your kid the perfect laptop computer with internet installed on it.

How to Make Your Wireless Internet Faster

You’ve probably heard that the wireless internet is the next best thing, and that it is even the future of the broadband internet. You decided to spend your money on purchasing a new router, you also bought a few new devices to help you make use of the wireless technology, only to end up facing another disappointment; the speed you are getting isn’t what you were promised, and you’re now starting to wonder if something is wrong with your devices, or if the wireless internet technology is a hoax. It happens to everybody all the time, so the first step you should take is to allay your fears. The problem isn’t with the wireless network, and neither is it with your devices. You can easily take some of the steps below to help make your wireless internet faster.

Restart Your Computer and Your Wireless Devices

I’ve experienced some serious situations in which my wireless network was not cooperating and there was virtually nothing I could do to get it to work. After reading up a lot of articles on troubleshooting a wireless network I discovered that the real solution was to restart.

You wouldn’t even believe it, but, sometimes, the only solution to your slow wireless internet problems is to restart your computer and all your wireless devices. Depending on your device, you might need to give it a hard reset to be able to get things to work, so make sure you don’t jump to conclusions until you’ve done that.

Relocate Your Computer and Router

Distance can also mean a lot of difference when it comes to the wireless internet speed you are getting. If it were a wired internet connection the story would have been different, but when it comes to the wireless internet we need to consider all possibilities.

You can improve the speed of your wireless internet by moving your computer a few steps closer to your router. And, sometimes, the thing that needs a moving is your router; so make sure you don’t hesitate to move anything you think needs to be moved to help you ensure a better wireless experience.

Watch Out for Interference and take Steps to Prevent It

Interference can also be a major killer to the quality of your wireless signals so you should make sure you don’t take it lightly. Try to look around you for devices that might be preventing the quality of your signals, and make sure you move them away from your vicinity, or relocate your devices to a better place.

What are the Benefits of Using a Broadband Dongle?

Very few people pay attention to the kind of device they use to access the internet, and most of them hardly know what they are missing as a result. There are a lot of devices and modems that can help you get connected to the internet, and the kind of device you use matter a lot. For example, it is often better to connect to the internet through a wired connection than through a wireless connection. As far as devices are concerned, a dongle is currently one of the best forms of broadband modems available in the market today and this article will be giving you a few reasons why it is better to use a mobile broadband dongle.

Better Internet Speeds

The number one advantage to using a broadband dongle to connect to the internet is that it provides you with better internet speeds. Most modems available today only provide you with a few megabytes of data per seconds, whereas the case is different with a mobile dongle. With a broadband dongle you can easily get around 3.6mbps of data or up to 7.2mbps of data on any network. That kind of speed is faster than what some other forms of broadband internet connection provide.

It is More Portable

Another advantage to using a mobile broadband dongle is that it is very portable and as a result can be used everywhere. It doesn’t matter whether you are trying to access the internet in your home, or whether you are trying to access the internet in the car, or whether you are trying to access the internet in front of the beach; with the right broadband dongle you will be able to enjoy uninterrupted access to the internet.

Portability is king when it comes to choosing an internet connection, and a broadband dongle provides you with just that.

It Can be Used with Any ISP

A broadband dongle is also highly effective and useful in the sense that you can use it with any ISP you want. Unlike with most other broadband modems, you don’t have to stick with the ISP that sold the modem to you. Very few ISPs do lock their broadband dongle, and even if your ISP decides to lock theirs you can easily unlock it through the help of tutorials available online.

It Doesn't Need to be Charged

Another benefit of using a broadband dongle is that it doesn’t need to be charged. If you are trying to connect to the internet by tethering your mobile phone with your computer you won’t be able to enjoy the internet for a long time if you don’t charge your mobile phone because the battery will eventually run down. This isn’t the case with a broadband dongle. All you need to do is connect your dongle to your laptop or the computer of your choice and you are good to go.

Another great thing about the broadband dongle is that the fact that you are not charging doesn’t make it ineffective. In fact, it is faster than most broadband devices available today.

Three Deals One Price – The Xfinity Cable Internet, TV and Voice Plan

While others think, it is the trait of the leaders to get it done and that is what Comcast has done for their customers. There is a slight difference though. They have rebranded their triple play services under the name of Xfinity and have presented it to their clients. Customers however do not have a reason to think that they are getting the old just in a new packet. It is something more. The triple play services include the company’s cable internet access now known as Xfinity cable Internet, digital cable and cable telephone services. Consumers opting for the Triple Play Bundle will get to enjoy the benefits of all the three services but at a cost that they cannot even imagine in their dream!

Xfinity is a money saving offer for consumers. It is like getting a three in one value saving pack that many shopping malls put up for their customers. Launched way back in February 2010, Xfinity has climbed the popularity charts steadily and why not? After all, how many companies can afford to provide improved services that too at just takeaway prices? Not many for sure. So with the rebranding implementation there was a certain change in the names according to which Comcast Internet was renamed to Xfinity cable internet, Comcast Digital Cable was renamed as Xfinity TV and Comcast Telephone services to Xfinity Voice.

The best part of this entire rebranding is that consumers are promised better and faster services. Take for example Xfinity cable internet. It promises high speed internet access to users as compared to any DSL broadband. Things like streaming content, downloading software and online games have become easier now. Consumers are promised benefits according to two plans- the Performance Plan and the Blast Plan. Consumers opting for the Performance Plan will be able to use speed up to 15 megabytes per second. In comparison, the Blast plan ensures a good download speed of something around say 20 megabytes per second. The plans include some more added features like a security suite, online data storage and free email.

There is something more too. The Xfinity Internet2go plan. A unique mobile service offering high speed internet access through a wireless network. This plan has a nationwide 3G and 4G coverage and works in all those regions where Comcast has their mobile network coverage. The plan is particularly a favorite among business people who always have the urgency to have an access to high seed internet while traveling.

Among the various Xfinity cable internet plans, consumers can also opt for Xfinity Wi-Fi. According to this, consumers can easily connect up to three Wi-Fi enabled devices to the Internet at public places which enables Wi-Fi connection.

Comcast values its customers and hence has put up various plans on offer from which consumers are free to make their choices according to their needs and requirements. The plans gives the users the liberty to bundle up two or more services together available at a certain price. This means that Xfinity cable internet can be teamed up with Xfinity TV and Xfinity Voice or either any of the two as per your wish.

Xfinity TV plans offer digital video recorder service, on demand programming and digital cable channels. The plan also entitles the users to view programs online. Xfinity TV plans are also accessible to non- Comcast customers who simply need to register with the Xfinity TV website to make the best of the services.

The Xfinity voice plans makes long distance calls cheaper and also gives option for unlimited calls. The basic features include a caller ID, three way calling option and call waiting. With the Xfinity brand, things are taken a step further. Users can make the best of advanced online features which offers the option to view voice mail online. If any of the users are subscribed to Xfinity cable internet then they have the option to view caller ID on the computer.

Xfinity is thus a magic box which brings forth one surprise after another. According to Comcast, Xfinity offers users multiple content choices and they are proving their words true with their actions.

How to Connect Your Computer to the Internet Using Mobile Broadband

The broadband internet market is growing significantly every day, due to the fact that a lot of people are starting to see how important fast access to the internet is. However, this also means a lot more problems for internet users – it resulted in a lot of competition within ISPs and as a result only the ISPs with a big marketing budget survive, and when these ISPs grow too big they start charging there users exorbitantly while at the same time putting less effort into improving their network for computer users. The great thing about this, though, is that the mobile broadband market is growing every day, especially in developed countries, and a lot of ISPs even give their mobile internet users unlimited internet access. This presents great opportunities for internet users who are "smart", and in this article I will be sharing some of the top ways to connect your computer to the internet by piggybacking on your mobile internet access.

Mobile Wireless Sharing

With the kind of development going on in the mobile space today we keep on experiencing a lot of new mobile developments. The rate at which cool smartphones are released is stunning, and the number of these smartphones that goes into circulation every day is great. In fact, there is every probability you already own a smartphone if you are reading this, and the great thing is that you can use the smartphone to your advantage when trying to connect your computer to the internet.

Most smartphones provide you with the ability to share your internet connection with other devices wirelessly, and if you have a laptop computer or any other device with support for Wi-Fi you can easily share your internet with it.

Sharing your mobile internet connection wirelessly isn’t that specific, though, and there is no one guide for doing that – you can refer to the manual that came with your smartphone or to the website of your manufacturer for more info on how to do this.

Mobile Phone Tethering

Another way you can connect your computer to the internet using your mobile broadband internet connection is by using your mobile phone. All you need to do is install the default software that came with your mobile phone (also known as PC suite) – once the software is installed you can then connect your mobile phone to your computer via USB or Bluetooth.

With this technique, you might need to do a little research in order to get important details from your ISP such as, their APN (access point name), their username and password and their dial-up number. These settings is entirely different for every ISP, but one way I have found the right settings for every ISP I have used is by using Google to research my ISP details.

Using a Mobile Broadband Modem

The final option is to use a mobile broadband modem. This option isn’t that difficult at all – you only need to buy a 3G or 3.5G broadband modem (depending on your ISP), and then insert your SIM card into your modem. You should then install the modem in your computer, configure it with your ISP details (you can get this by following the process in step 2 above) and then connect and start enjoying access to the internet.

'Spam Capital' - India arrests six in Phishing

Police in India say they have arrested six foreign nationals suspected of defrauding hundreds of people using text message and email scams.

Scam victims were duped after being told they had won a lottery.

Authorities seized 14 laptops, seven memory sticks and 23 mobile phones, as well as fake documents and cash.

The arrests come after security firm Kaspersky reported that India now sent more spam than any other country in the world.

Police said the six men, all Nigerian, would be remanded in custody until 12 January.

The arrests signal attempts to crack down on a growing cybercrime problem in the region.

Mumbai-based internet security specialist Vijay Mukhi said poor enforcement of laws meant spammers could act with impunity.

"We have an Information Technology Act that was introduced in 2000. But we don't have any convictions under it and it's silent on spam," he said.

"If I'm a spammer, I would rather spam from India to India and the rest of world because nothing will happen to me."

In its report, Kaspersky said 14.8% of all spam email sent in the three months prior to the end of September had originated in India, BBC reported.

One Million Victims of Cybercrime a Day Says Report

Over one million adults around the world are the victim of cybercrime every day, according to figures published Wednesday.

The Norton Cybercrime Report 2011 paints a gloomy picture. The company estimates that cybercrime cost online consumers over the 24 countries surveyed a total of $388 billion in just one year. By contrast, according to Adam Palmer, Lead Advisor at Norton Cybersecurity Institute and a former U.S. Navy prosecutor, the entire global trade in cocaine, heroin and marijuana is worth $288 billion.

Globally, the most common—and most preventable—type of cybercrime is computer viruses or malware. The next two most prevalent were online scams and phishing.

All told, Symantec estimates that there are 431 million victims a year. Your chances of being a victim of cybercrime (44% of people reported being a victim) are substantially greater that being a victim of a physical crime (15%).

Those rates vary quite dramatically globally. According to Mr. Palmer, Chinese users are far more likely to suffer an attack. Some 85% of Chinese users were victims, compared to just 38% of Japanese.

European figures show Germans and Poles to be the most likely victims of cybercrime among the nations surveyed.

   1. Germany 76%
   2. Poland 76%
   3. Switzerland 73%
   4. Spain 69%
   5. Italy 68%
   6. France 60%
   7. Sweden 60%
   8. Denmark 57%
   9. U.K. 51%
  10. Belgium 50%
  11. The Netherlands 41%

In all countries surveyed, men were more likely to be victims than women, and the report identifies the riskier behaviors associated with becoming a target for cybercriminals:

   1. Viewing adult content online (80% cf. 67% non-viewers of adult content).
   2. Lying online (78% cf. 59% who don’t lie online).
   3. Using free Wi-Fi (77% cf. 62% who don’t use free Wi-Fi).

A large share of the cybercrime burden is shouldered by emerging markets, with cybercrime costing China £16 billion ($25.8 billion), Brazil £9.5 billion and India £2.5 billion in the past twelve months.

The growing importance of mobile phones and mobile Internet in these markets plays a key role. While globally 10% of online adults have experienced cybercrime on their mobile phone, this triples to 31% in China where nearly three quarters of respondents (74%) access the Internet via their mobile phone.

Symantec carried out the research in 24 countries conducting 19,636 interviews.

Google +1 button optimized for mobile web

The Google +1 button, the public sharing tool which was introduced to the internet a few months back has now been thrown open for mobile web as well,. This development with respect to mobile phones comes after Google + was introduced for the iPhone in the second half of July. With this, net savvy users can publicly share what they like or recommend while on-the-go.

The +1 button works in a two-way manner. With this, users can share pages they like, find useful, or want to recommend for possible future use to others. This can be done within their circles, restricted to people viewing the +1ed pages in the profile or it can be shared with everyone.

The other way round, this button helps improve the Google search process by showing +1 recommendations in a separate category in the search results. Thus, users can refine and simplify their search process by seeing what pages from their search have been +1ed.

Users can also control the visibility of their +1s. They can easily change the settings to restrict the visibility to a select number of circles, while blocking a few. Also, +1s can be kept hidden in the profile where no one will get a view of a user’s list, while they remain publicly visible.

According to the update, the Google +1 button will appear automatically to anyone using Android version 2.1 or above and iOS 4.0 or higher browsers.

Majority of employees use Internet for personal work at office

A significant number of Indian employees use Internet for personal work during the office hours which is negatively impacting productivity as well as work culture, a survey has found.

According to the survey by recruitment tendering platform MyHiringClub.com, 59 per cent of Indian employees surveyed are using Internet for completing personal work at work place.

Indian employees are far ahead of their counterparts in the Middle East and Singapore in terms of using Internet for personal works during the office hours.

In Singapore, 53 of respondents said that they use Internet for personal works in office hours. In the Middle East 37 per cent respondents said they use Internet for non-work related activities during work hours.

“Employees need to be mindful of company policies on Internet usage and should designate their lunch hour or break times for shopping excursions or other non-work related activities,” MyHiringClub.com CEO Rajesh Kumar said.

“Internet use at work place for non-work related activities negatively impacts on productivity,” he said.

The survey, which was conducted among 22,658 employees and 3,296 hiring managers and senior executives in India, Gulf/Middle East and Singapore, said online shopping and share trading are the most visible factors which are affecting the productivity at the work place.

It found that 32 per cent of employees were spending 12-14 hours per week for doing online share trading during the work hours.

Another 29 per cent employees said they do online shopping in office hours and average 11-12 working hours per week they spent on that while 21 per cent employees said they spend average 7-8 hours per week for doing online holiday shopping.

Further, 42 per cent of respondents have a social networking profile. Besides, 57 per cent of those with a profile spend more than an hour’s time per day on their social networking page during the workday with 12 per cent spending less than an hour time.

Notably, 83 per cent of hiring managers surveyed said using Internet at work for non-work related activities is spoiling the relation between employers and employees.

Interestingly, 62 per cent of Indian employees surveyed said that they monitor employees’ Internet usage as compared to 77 per cent in Singapore and 49 per cent in Gulf/Middle East.

ICANN approves new web domain names

Any word, in any characters, can be used in domain names; seen as biggest shake-up ever of Internet; corporations likely to be first to take advantage
Singapore: good.food, learnto.salsa, glossy.lipstick - people and companies will be able to set up a website with almost any address by the end of next year if they have a legitimate claim to the domain name and can pay a hefty fee.

The Internet body that oversees domain names voted on Monday to end restricting them to suffixes like. Com or. Gov and will receive applications for new names from 12 January next year with the first approvals likely by the end of 2012.

And they can be in any characters - Cyrillic, Kanji or Devanagari for instance, for users of Russian, Japanese and Hindi.

"It's the biggest change I think we have seen on the Internet," Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), told reporters.

"We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration."
The new gTLD, or generic top-level domain, programme was approved by 13 votes to one with two abstentions by the board of ICANN at a meeting in Singapore.

The sole opposition came from a member who felt that more time was needed to hold discussions with government and others parties, ICANN officials said.
The new names could infringe on social and religious sensitivities, for instance if someone wanted to set up a. Nazi domain, said Dengate Thrush.

And people who have invested in securing lucrative. Com domains will find the value of the holdings diluted by the new rules, he added.

Thrashing out the rules and overcoming objections has taken years, ICANN officials said.
For instance, while the new steep charges of $ 185,000 to apply for a domain name could deter cyber-squatters, companies with well known trademarks worry that they may have to contend with series of copycat names like coke.paris or google.zambia.

ICANN hopes to weed these out in an intensive approval process that will take months, at the least, and also involve governments and other agencies.
"I think we've crossed the Rubicon," said Antony van Couvering, CEO of Top Level Domain Holdings Ltd.

"We were expecting it to happen some time in 2009," he said, adding that the change was also delayed by governments wanting to handle trademark issues in their own countries. "The process has been so lengthy that some people who wanted to do it are now? Either broke or disgusted."

Companies
Experts say corporations should be among the first to register, resulting in domain names ending in brands like .Toyota, .Apple or .Coke.

The move is seen as a big opportunity for brands to gain more control over their online presence and send visitors more directly to parts of their sites - and a danger for those who fail to take advantage.

Japanese electronics giant Canon, for instance, has already said it plans to apply for rights to use domain names ending with .Canon.

Besides the $ 185,000 to apply, individuals or organisations will have to show a legitimate claim to the name they are buying. ICANN is taking on hundreds of consultants to whom it will outsource the job of adjudicating claims.

Today, just 22 gTLDs exist -.Com,.Org and .Info are a few examples - plus about 250 country-level domains like .Uk or .Cn. After the change, several hundred new gTLDs are expected to come into existence.

As well as big brands, organisations such as cities or other communities are expected to apply.
GTLDs such as. Nyc, .London or .Food could provide opportunities for many smaller businesses to grab names no longer available at the .Com level - like bicycles.london or indian.food.

"It's the next expansion of the Internet, it's the future of the Internet," said Kieren McCarthy, the CEO of .Nxt, Inc, a San Francisco-based company which covers Internet policy and governance issues.
"I think our kids will think that we were crazy to always talk about .Coms."

Access Two Gmail Accounts at once in the Same Browser

Great news for Gmail users, now Access Two Gmail Accounts at once in the Same Browser. Yes now you can access your two different Gmail accounts at the same time in the same browser. I have a couple different Gmail addresses that I use for different purposes. Historically, Google Accounts – including Gmail accounts — have only let people access one account at a time per browser, so using both accounts has been a bit inconvenient. I’ve either had to sign out and sign back in, use a second browser for my second account, or use a Chrome incognito window. And I'm not alone; lots of people have asked this for a better way to use multiple accounts at once in the same browser.

Now, you can visit google.com/accounts and click the link next to "Multiple sign-in." Just follow the steps given below and you will have both your Gmail accounts ready to go with.

After you sign into your first account, you can sign in with up to two additional accounts from the new accounts menu in the upper right hand corner of Gmail, then easily toggle back and forth between them.

You can even open multiple Gmail tabs — one for each of your accounts.
You can use multiple sign-in with the following desktop versions of these Google products:
  • Code
  • Calendar
  • Gmail
  • Reader
  • Sites
  • Voice
  • Docs(coming soon)

Other Google products and the mobile versions of the above products do not support the use of multiple accounts in the same web browser. Instead, they default to the first account that you signed in to from your current browser.

Please keep in mind that this is a feature for advanced users, and there are a couple things to watch out for:

1) Not all Google services support multiple account sign-in yet. For the services that don't support it (like Blogger and Picasa Web Albums), you'll be defaulted to the first account you signed in with during that browser session. So if you click a link from Gmail to Blogger, for example, you'll be logged into Blogger with the first account you signed in with, even if you clicked the link to Blogger from your second Gmail account.

2) We’re still working on making Gmail and Calendar work offline with multiple sign-in. If you rely on offline access, you probably don't want to enable this feature quite yet.

3) Multiple account sign-in only works on desktop browsers for now, so if you use Gmail on your phone's browser you won't see this option yet.

Tip: Always check your address (at top right) to make sure you’re using the account you want.
